Wine... what kind

Often recipes will call for Dry White Wine, other will note, Red Wine. Since I do not drink, I have no idea what this means - nor what to do buy. Can you suggest a specific one? Or better yet, add such information to the recipe in ( ) to help the user?

Chardonnay is a dry white wine.

I used cabernet for this recipe because I prefer the color.
